Scope Often times technical support staffs have been too busy to properly maintain accurate network documentation, or growth has been such that documentation has been given a low priority. Important configuration data is frequently maintained by multiple independent technical groups in different formats. No group has a complete picture of the entire network. As a result, all troubleshooting efforts are hindered by the lack of knowledge, inconsistencies and inaccuracies. Upgrading network components is jeopardized as resellers are unaware of technical network requirements. NPI's NetDOCSTM service has developed the techniques necessary to quickly discover an entire enterprise network and assemble the professional documentation required to support complex networks. NPI's software (NetSpector) quickly and efficiently gathers pertinent configuration and operational data from all routers, switches, hubs, servers and other devices within the network, and builds an Access database for use in documenting all facets of an enterprise network. NPI personnel has evaluated equivalent tools from multiple vendors over the past years and found each to be significantly lacking in one or more areas. Our tools allow NPI personnel to retrieve layer-3 routing tables, layer-2 switch forwarding tables, ARP tables from each significant device, key spanning tree parameters, interface MTU values, RMON information and significant amounts of other configuration data, providing our personnel with a complete picture of the network based on data commonly available from the customer's network devices. Configuration information from the customer's network components are used to create the geographical definitions of the system's connectivity including ports, protocols, details of access control lists and filters, and non-default configuration metrics. NPI NetDOCSTM will give the client a real roadmap of their network which will increase the client's configuration control and the troubleshooting capabilities for all technical groups. All final diagrams and schematics are created in Microsoft's Visio. In addition to the drawings, the Access database, any Excel spreadsheets or Word documents resulting from NPI NetDOCSTM service are provided to the customer in both electronic and paper copies. Enterprise schematic diagrams are generally printed in 24" x 36" color format. The NPI NetDOCSTM Layered Methodology includes:
